Blanche Middleton was my mother-in-law. Her greatest gift to me was my beautiful partner of 40 years. (whom I have known for over 54 years) Blanche has always been welcoming, protective, caring, thoughtful, loving, selfless, forgiving -etceteras. If you ever met her you would know all this of course. I don’t think I've heard her say a negative thing about anyone aside from specific politicians. (The family knows what I’m referring to) I remember her fielding a call I made to their home looking for Victoria Middleton at about 3 a.m. one morning. She asked in an irritated tone who was calling at such a ridiculous hour (she knew who it was) to which I responded with my best embarrassed cover-up, “Tom”. She pursued, “Well, Tom who?” I said, “Tom Jones”. She must have smiled as she gave me a forwarding number addressing me as “Tom”. The “Tom Jones” call became a running joke between us for 41 years. Blanche was there when our children were born and was a beloved grandmother in the old fashioned grandmotherly way. She would always bake an apple pie on my birthday which was extra special because December babies usually get short changed around Christmas. Blanche called me “Gorden” in her stretched out drawl version when she demanded that I listen to what she had to say. (Usually an admonition of some type, associated with that long version of my name) She was special. Blanche reflected love in everything she did. It was the love of Jesus that she reflected and that is why everybody loved her. I learned later that on November 4, 1955 she had a near death experience. She said she left her body, travelled through a lighted tunnel and saw Jesus. She recalled saying, “I’ll never doubt you again Jesus “, at the same time that her heart was jolted back to work by physicians. They thought they’d lost her. This same Jesus never left her and shone through her all the time. My dad who was a Baptist minister of 50 years frequently said of Blanche, “She is the most forgiving person I have ever met. Of all the people I know she is the one I’d choose if I needed acceptance, compassion and forgiveness.” Talk to anyone, they will say the same. There was something about Blanche – She was special. Over the last few days family have gathered and we were all privileged to say goodbye to her. It was the most special gathering and farewell that I have ever been witness too. Children and spouses, friends, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren all said goodbye in their own way. We sang hymns and songs that she loved, (What a friend we have in Jesus, When the roll is called up yonder, The old rugged cross, At the cross, There is a fountain, No one ever cared for me like Jesus etceteras ) all of which drew a quick response and instant recognition through her body language and her eyes. I don’t think anyone of could get through an entire song without tears. She tried to sing as best she could. She said hello to some calling them by name and uttered I love you to others. It seemed that her last breaths were coupled with an attempt to say “I love you” but she didn't have to. She lived a life overflowing with love and we all felt it. This was the most beautiful tribute and outpouring of family love I’ve ever seen. I will always feel the love of my dear mother-in-law. She is at peace now and for that I am happy. Blanche went home to be with Jesus (a second time) last night. She arrived at about 9:50 p.m. and she was on time. Gorden White
