Walter Patyk

Obituary of Walter Patyk

PATYK, Walter (Walerian)

Peacefully on May 7, 2022 at the age of 98.

Loving father of Stephen (Bettina) of Lakeside, Montana and Lori (Greg Uhrynuk) of Toronto. Proud grandpa of Erik, Briana (Joshua London), Adam and Gillian. Predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Lillian Iola 'Joy' (nee Flewelling). He was predeceased by his parents, Kazimiera (nee Pelko) and Jozef Patyk and by his siblings Cheslawa, Zofia, Stefan, Helen and Waclaw. He will be lovingly remembered by his cousins, nieces and nephews and other extended family members and friends. Walter's life was forever altered at the age of 16 when his village in Poland was invaded by the Soviets in 1939 and he and his family were imprisoned in a Labour camp in Siberia. Despite the odds, Walter survived and was released to fight with the Polish forces under command of the British Army in WWII. Walter was a front-line radio operator in the Infantry, saw heavy action and was seriously wounded during the Battle of Monte Cassino. At the conclusion of the war, with his homeland and family in disarray, he immigrated to Canada. He was required to complete 2 years of service with placement decided by the Canadian government. He was billeted to work for a farmer in Wellington County, ON. There he met and fell in love with Joy, the daughter of a neighboring farmer. The rest is history - Walter and Joy lived, worked and raised their family in Brantford until 1987 and fulfilled their retirement dream of residing at their 2nd home in Sauble Beach for the next 32 years. Walter loved to putter about their property and took great pride in his perfect lawns. They enjoyed traveling and wintered in Arizona for many years. They were active within the Sauble Beach United Church community. Walter was a remarkable, strong and humble man. He was our hero. Special thanks to the staff of The Millwood Retirement Residence in Toronto for the kindness and care you provided to Walter.
